Spirits
The Haida people had a lot of Spirits in their religion but only one person to talk to them, the Shaman. Another name for Shaman is Chief or Kilstlaai. The Shamans were also the people who could heal the sick. A shaman could be man or woman but were mostly men. They wore special clothing including: masks, aprons, bearskin robes, skin drums, charms, necklaces and rattles.
The Shaman's: Rattle, Charm, and Necklace.
My favorite spirit is the Bear Spirit.
The father was the Bear and the mother was human, 'Mother Bear.' The cubs names were Bad Bear and Good Bear. Their family is part of a Bill Reid sculpture called "The Spirit of the Haida Gwaii" made of jade found at the Vancouver airport. To tell the difference between the bear twins, Bad Bear's ears are pointing back while Good Bear's ears are pointing forward. In the sculpture, their family goes on a boat with the Shaman, Mouse Lady, Frog, Eagle, Wolf and Raven to see where fate will bring them.
